xp drama, can't get to safe mode

By missieorama ·
My issues are numberous, but i will only concentrate on the computer :)

While downloading/installing microsoft updates, computer running xp sp2 was shut off inappropriately (kids). now it won't start. My monitor as a matter of being a PITA, doesn't come on until the windows screen appears so trying to get in safe mode is about impossible because i cannot see to pick which mode to start in.

so what i did, having another hard drive, is I made the old drive a slave. I can get to most things on the now slave drive, except 'my documents' 'favorites' 'desktop' etc it says access denied. I have gone to properties for these folders to change ownership, only that option is not there. (wondering if it is only there in safe mode). there isn't a security tab, just a sharing tab. it will not allow me to share the folder either.

running it as a slave i have scanned for virus, malware, etc. with AVG free 8.0. nothing was found.

I do have somewhere a disk that came with each system, both being emachines. i do not want to redo the whole drive, i have not backed up the files i am trying to get to, which is why i am trying to get to them. pictures, documents mainly. but the new drive is not set up to me exact preferences and software packages which is bothersome to me (for instance, i won word 2003 and had to download a trial version for the new hard drive.

of course, the monitor still only turns on at the windows start screen. the old drive was password protected (save there really wasn't a password). owner name on both drives is the same.

more about it

by missieorama In reply to xp drama, can't get to sa ...

also wondered if some sort of recovery software would be helpful, have a good one on the slave drive, but cannot get to it (seems to be just on the desktop as i cannot locate it in program files, which is easily accessed.

i know i had some damaged files on a cameral once and was able to get to those after using this software PC something i think.

says the folders i am trying to access are empty, until some sort of scan is completed, defrag or schdsk or something, which i found interesting and may be important to note here.

ultimately, i would like to unslave the drive and run it as master again. with all my info still viable and available..

any help would be much appreciated.

thank you

I am sure that if you put your drive back in the PC and estart your computer, and then press F8 repeatedly during the initial startup you will eventually see the screen to start your computer in Safe Mode.
Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.
Click Start, Run type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and then press ENTER:
Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state prior to loading the Service Pack.
