My issues are numberous, but i will only concentrate on the computer 🙂
While downloading/installing microsoft updates, computer running xp sp2 was shut off inappropriately (kids). now it won’t start. My monitor as a matter of being a PITA, doesn’t come on until the windows screen appears so trying to get in safe mode is about impossible because i cannot see to pick which mode to start in.
so what i did, having another hard drive, is I made the old drive a slave. I can get to most things on the now slave drive, except ‘my documents’ ‘favorites’ ‘desktop’ etc it says access denied. I have gone to properties for these folders to change ownership, only that option is not there. (wondering if it is only there in safe mode). there isn’t a security tab, just a sharing tab. it will not allow me to share the folder either.
running it as a slave i have scanned for virus, malware, etc. with AVG free 8.0. nothing was found.
I do have somewhere a disk that came with each system, both being emachines. i do not want to redo the whole drive, i have not backed up the files i am trying to get to, which is why i am trying to get to them. pictures, documents mainly. but the new drive is not set up to me exact preferences and software packages which is bothersome to me (for instance, i won word 2003 and had to download a trial version for the new hard drive.
of course, the monitor still only turns on at the windows start screen. the old drive was password protected (save there really wasn’t a password). owner name on both drives is the same.
