XP file encryption key

By ta88ycat ·
Hi, As per this thread

http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-11184-0.html?forumID=49&threadID=195373

I have had to reload XP and cannot open my encrypted files.
However, I still have the profile that encrypted the files and I have a full robocopy (with all rights etc) of the drive that was encrypted.

I have no export of keys etc, can I copy a file or export from my robocopy drive or profile?

cheers
Paul

You need to restore your profile back to C:\Documents and Settings which should also contain your personal certificates.

If you are even using EFS then you should always backup your private key using Certifcates.msc to disk.

Anyway check out:

Install the encrypted drive into a working XP pc as slave.

Then use the MS Backup utility that is on your XP CD to remove EFS protection. Use the MS Backup utility to backup your EFS files, then recover them. During the recovery there is an option for removing EFS protection.

Thanks guys.

I have tried both answers and still get error - file is encrypted - agggh!

Backup works ok and restores ok (I unchecked the three options for file restore), but to no avail.

Need the folder restored - it has my accounts in.

Check out this article. It may help you find the files that you need to merge in with your newly created account to access your encrypted files.

Thanks for all your help guys!
Unfortunately nothing worked - copying profiles, keys , system certs etc. Think it was because restored profile was from old computer name and even changing this on new drive still failed.
However..I have a solution...

Download AEFSDR Advanced EFS Data Recovery trial allowed me to search for keys and files and decrypt the first 512 bytes of each file successfully. Then a quick registration and hey presto - all sorted.

DL from http://www.download3k.com/Advanced-EFS-Data-Recovery/Download-Free-aefsdr.zip.html

Can also DL from tucows.

Manufacturer: http://www.elcomsoft.com/aefsdr.html

happy days.
Thanks again - I am now more aware of EFS and the need to backup keys etc.
