XP File Sharing with other OS

By fixerupper ·
I have 3 computers with XP, ME and 98 on them. They are all using a combination wireless/line router to acess the internet. As well as local file sharing. Internet access is fine but while the XP computer is on the other computers cannot see each other (they are not listed in network neighbourhood). When it is turned off the computers can see each other again.

Thank-you for any suggestions.

XP File Sharing with other OS

try checking for a bad nic. Sometimes a bad nic can cause odd behavior if its sending out bad data. You could swap NICS with one of the other PCs and see how things react then. Also check XPs firewall. I had odd problems letting it stay on. If you're behind a router spitting out private IPs(192.x.x.x, 10.x.x.x, etc.) you should be safe with turning off your XP firewall. If you are using static IPs make sure they are not duplicated. Same goes for names you're using on the PCs. May also switch cables around to other ports and make sure its not a port issue.

Basicly sounds like a config. or bad nic issue with XP. Something else to try is to set NIC speed/duplex to autonegotiate or(if already at auto) lowest setting(I.E.: 10Mb and half duplex). Just thought id try and give you some initial points to check.

Hope this helps

Jason

Unfortunately, I could not attempt the proposed resolutions. I installed NetBEUI one night, it didn't change anything. I uninstalled it and the problem resolved itself.
I appreciate the member input though!
