XP Hanging

By varaamit ·
I have already posted a question regarding this, however i'm not sure it is the sasser worm as the computer does it when u start the computer up. when loading the bar freezes and i cant do anything. i restart the computer a few times and then it logs in. is there n e way of stopping this. i have XP professional. also sometimes this blue screen comes up saying that the computer has closed to prevent damage to my computer and i am again forced to restart my computer. i'm not sure what it is but it says things about new hardware and stuff like that.

It is possible that a virus struck, but it sounds like a corrupt driver for something.

Try booting into Safe mode. If it boots up OK, try looking into your startup apps and disable any non needed ones. Then unplug everything attatched to your system except the basics. Then try booting up again. If it works, then try plugging things in and opening program until the fault occurs, then you have found the culprit.

If it still fails, write down as much info as you can about the errors on bootup, even add codes. Then there will be more info to go on.

Try using recovery options for your system, but I would suggest backing up any important data first, even if it means to slave the drive on another system.
You can try the recovery console, system restore, and using the cd's to repair your installation. If those do not help, then rebuild.

You can use the "/SOS" switch in your boot.ini startup file to make Windows XP display the drivers it loads rather than the screen with the progress bar.

You can change your boot.ini to look something like:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /sos

You can then see what XP does just before it freezes.
