XP Hangs after login then works fine

By Josha ·
I have an HP pavillion With windows XP PRO. I have 1 of 2 problems on a regular basis, they both seem related. 1) After Login in only the wallpaper appears. 15 min. later everything else appears and all runs fine. This happens only from a fresh boot or a reset not from a log off/log on. 2) After logging on every thing appears but certian things hang, like all of the system services. you cant pull up my computer properties, you can't open network connections, you cant even open things like system restore. However, 15 min later all the property windows that I tried to open open. and the system runs normaly. Also you can run programs like microsoft word with out issue, but you can't print till the system come out of it's glitch.

Related to both problems the system process never goes above 4%. The hard drive light won't come on during the 15 min. No timers show up on the mouse pointer. I've disable and re enabled all the HP junk that come with the computer as well as other non essential processes(with no effect) I've started the system in diagnostic start up and still get the same effects.

When a PC slows down the first steps shoulb be to scan for viruses, adware, and spyware.

Download, install, update, and run the following, if you have not already done so:

Stinger - Available at

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Ad-Aware SE and Spybot Search & Destroy - both available at downloads.com

Yeah, mine is doing the same thing. Except it will only do it from log-off from another account on the same machine.

This computer is NAV2004 Pro certified virus free.

It seems to have begun with the latest update to SP2.

Ok check mapped drives, see if there are more then eight. If so do they need all of them as they boot up? XP and 2000 will look for network drives and search a long time. Is your network 100 mb, or faster? Are all the drives it is looking for the same, or are some of them slower? Try booting to the computer login, skip the network login. Login as administrator and see how fast it boots. If it boots fast then there is some thing in the discovery proccess that is slowing it down. There is a network connection it is looking for and is ether slow to find it or it can not find it and by passes it or you have some thing that is looking for access and can not find it. Try reinstalling and and rebooting to see if it happens after a new install. You have me thinking now! This could be a bad thing:) I love a problem!

I love a problem too. However...The network is a small work group and this error occured with both hard lines and wireless networks. The computer has no mapped drives. And the Admin Login: The login is an administrative account on the local machine. There is no Network authentication, however there is a router for shaing an ISDN line. I don't have the problem with the 4 other computers. They all wirelessly linked with an access point. I'm also not sold on it being a network issue because things like my computer properties, the device manage and changes to MSCONFIG are unaccessable for the first 15 min.
I can't yet rate this positivly because A full reintall is not an option for me yet. The computer is in a peer to peer network at a remote location, I won't be back until early next month.

if it is regular but intermittant i would be thinking hardware...nic storm or kinked or miswired patch cable...
any new or changed hardware on this box?
anything in the event log? did you try a new nic or unplugging the network cable for atest... and you have tried other logins...
this thing is wireless or wired to internet. i am not clear from your comments.
