XP hangs on “loading personal settings”

by peadar . Updated 15 years, 2 months ago

My Windows XP Home [SP 2, build 2600]login hangs at “Loading Personal Settings”. There is no sign of any hard disk (or other) activity, and if i leave it for an hour it doesn’t fix itself! It happens whether I use the Welcome screen or not. It also happens when I create and use a new login account.

This used to happen once in a while, now it’s more often than not. I can’t really restore to before it started happening then – because it’s so long ago that it started.

Occasionally I get past the login screen, only to see a completely blank desktop (no files, no start button, nothing on Ctrl-Alt-Del). Again, leaving it for ages makes no difference.

I have a cable modem, wireless router, two internal HDDs, two external HDDs (one firewire, one usb), two internal DVD-RWs, and a bunch of USB ports. And a wireless keyboard/mouse, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 display adapter, MED MD6144AO monitor. And I run antivir personal edition, no Norton.

I’ve come across other forum posts with similar problems, but no solutions. Usually I can log on properly after 3 or 4 resets. this morning it was rather more, and i’m worried it’s getting worse. Help!!
