XP Hibernate Problem

By Iain z-uk ·
This is really annoying, i've just upgraded my pc from an AMD k6 2 350 to an Athlon 1800+. I am using everything the same as before(HW + SW + OS) except for motherboard and processor.

Everything else works fine, but it just won't hibernate, eveytime it comes up with 'Prepaing To Hibernate' then the screen goes blank and just stays like that.

I've tried looking all over the web to no avail, i've checked all the BIOS settings i could think of, i've checked the motherboard CD, i've even tried with numerous fresh installs with primary and logical partitions and with NTFS and FAT 32 and its still the same every time. I don't know if its anything to do with the power settings, on my old system in the power settings there was a tab for APM, i presume my new system doesn't have that cos its ACPI but i don't know if there should be an ACPI tab, so if any one has any ideas i'm open to suggestion.

Cheers, Iain

XP Hibernate Problem

by Seagull Data Services In reply to XP Hibernate Problem

There seems to be a flaw in XP with regard to hibernation. My wife's notebook had the same problem. The only solution offered was to pull the battery to reset the machine.
It is very annoying, sorry I can't offer better advice.

What video card are you using? Device manager show any conflicts? Are you sure that you are using WinXP drivers for all of your hardware devices?

Do you do a clean install of the WinXP system after installing the systemboard? If not, then I recommend that you backup all your data, and rerun WinXP setup (boot to the cd) and format that drive.

The MS site has 44 articles when you input a search for hibernation under WinXP. You might want to check video drivers, netword card drivers, etc.

Thanks for your response it was actually the way my hd was partitioned, for some bizzar reason it was trying to save the hibernation data to the wrong partition.

Enter the power management section of your bios and it'll probalby give you a choice between APM and ACPI. Choose ACPI, I have noticed that when there are PNY video cards in the machine that XP doesn't deal with it very wlel.
