Xp Home Has trouble with FTP

By ccthompson ·
Ok,

The boss(CEO) is the only person having problems with this. When he goes to our ftp site, he get there ok. I mean he can see the folders. But when he tries to open the pictures,word docs, or spreadsheets, he gets denied, "Page cannot be displayed"

I figured his IE was screwed up or locked down too much, no go. Everything I have tried has not made a differance. I know he has IE v6. But I am unsure what Service Pack he has or if any. (SP1 i think, his machine is too old to handle SP2)

The only reason I am unsure what he has, is he is always traveling, always very busy, never has time for me to walk him through some stuff,ect...

I tried to install firefox, i get an error 425 when i try to access our site. Which may be part of the problem. Maybe the server cant make a connection back, but it does with everyone else. Firefox doesnt work at all for anyone!

So in other words, is there a tool I can get to check the connectivety from his machine to our site. Like a tracker??

Any ideas would be very helpful. Solutions would be ideal!

Thanks everyone!

Can you ping your server from his machine? Do a trace route (tracert) from his machine to your server. That would be a start.

Ican ping my external router from his machine. Then from there, my router forwards the proper ports to the proper machine!

THanks!

Connecting to (ftp.kmaserver.dynu.com) -> IP: 207.68.114.156 PORT: 21
Connected to (ftp.kmaserver.dynu.com) -> Time = 10ms
Socket connected waiting for login sequence.
Connection timeout. No response from server.
Active Help Link: http://www.smartftp.com/support/kb/index.php/58
Cannot login waiting to retry (30s)...

I got this log using SMARTFTP, i seem to be only able to get to my site with IE, can anyone help me with this problem?

Check the server's firewall. I know, i see you are using port 21, but you might want to check it yet again. Check to see if you can connect with an FTP client WITH and WITHOUT Passive Connection.

About using IE for FTP, I don't recommend this at all. I recommend using a dedicated FTP program for this. If there is a page that needs to be displayed, better to create an intranet using your server's html servers (either iis or apache) and link from there to your FTP by using links.

I did check the firewall again, port look good. When I use SmartFTP, i dont seem to have problems, but in the log, it does connect eventually.

I need to disable passive FTP in IE in order for my site to work. Even though I am behind a firewall. I dont get that, I thought passive FTP was just for that.

And just to let everyone know, I can connect to the site and open pictures all the time. And I have tried on mulitple other computers. No Prob, just seems to be him, so maybe its client related.

Any more ideas would be most helpful. Thank you for your post!
