XP Home not giving access to programs

By Sue T ·
I am running XP home edition. I have installed 2 programs this week and neither will allow anyone but the administrator to access and use these programs. These are not the first programs I installed but these are the first that I have run into this problem with. They also do not show up on the users Start Menus so you have to look in Program Files and double click the exe. How do I fix this so all users have access to these programs?

sounds like the install for these programs added the start menu reference to the Administrators start menu and not to teh all users start menu. Since it sounds likehte user can run the program by finding it in the file stucture, the easiest thing to do would be copy the entries from the adminisrators start menu, c:\documents and settings\administrator\startmenu\ to the all users start menu c:\documents and settings\all users\startmenu\. This will display the shortcut regardless of the user logged in.

The first answer is correct, but i would --cut-- and paste the shortcuts from the admin startmenu to the all users startmenu so that the admin account does not have double shortcuts appearing on his\her startmenu.

If the users cannot run the programs, you may want to add their accounts to the local admin accounts, sign on as them and run the programs once, and then put them back in the local user accounts. You shouldn't have to do this on Home edition, but i have seen this on Pro.

I tried cutting and pasting the shortcut from the admin start menu and pasting to the all users start menu but that didn't solve the problem. I then tried making the limited users administrators and then running the program as the user. It ran without a problem but as soon as I changed them back to Limited Users they were no longer able to use the programs. Do you have any other suggestions?

With the new information concerning User Rights, the issue is with how the program is designed to interact with the system and you have 3 options:
1) Grant the users administrative rights to the system
2) Use the ability in XP to assign run a program as a different user -- Right-click a program shortcut, and choose Properties. On the Shortcut tab, click the Advanced button. Check the box next to "Run with different credentials" and click OK twice to make the change effective. From now on, when you click the shortcut to start the program, you will be prompted for which user to run it as.
3) Replace the program in question with one that will allow a 'limited user' access to the program.

Of the three options, granting the users administrative rights will be the easiest. If you do not want to do this the only other way to use this program is to utilaize the Run As option. This can be set in the shortcut properties, but be aware this option may not always work -- I have seen mixed results using this option.

Thank you for your suggestions but I cannot get it to work with Run with different credentials. I would prefer to not give administrative access because I have an over zealous teenager and don't want to spend my nights figuring out what he has done to my computer. Poster rated this answer.
