XP Home->Pro Netowroking problems

By morganw02 ·
I set up a network between my laptop and desktop. Desktop is running XP Pro and laptop is running XP Home. I was able to share out my desktop hard drive via a wizard. I mapped the network drive and am now able to open it on my laptop, but I am unable to open any of the subsequent folders on the mapped drive. I keep getting a permissions error, so I tried to share out the folders individually on top of sharing out the drive. Still no luck. Any help is appreciated.

When you ran the Network Setup Wizard

Did you enable File & Printer Sharing?

If not what you are describing is exactly what should happen. You need to enable File & Printer sharing on both computers to be able to share files.

Well unless you have made the Data Files Private or they are Encrypted

by HAL 9000 Moderator In reply to printer & file sharing

They should be available to read on another system.

However if you have made all the files in your User Account Private or have them Encrypted that you will be unable to share them but you should be able to still see other files from the other computer.

private/encrypted files

How do I check to see if they are set to private or encrypted?

To see if they are private

by HAL 9000 Moderator In reply to private/encrypted files

With Windows XP create another User Account and log on using that and see if you can open your files in the normal User account. If you can not the Files are private.

To check if they are encrypted open My Computer then My Documents and look at the colour of the File Names if they are green they are encrypted.

Do you have a firewall setup on your desktop? If so you may need to configure it to allow file and print sharing.
