    xp home ver. user accounts

    Locked

    by tenn_techgirl ·

I have two friends who until recently did not have any user accounts setup on there PC?s. Both PC?s are single user only and they never bothered to set up an account. Some time last week these two people suddenly found that they had the admin user group created for them. How do I remove this option, so they can go back to booting straight onto the desktop?

Every NT based OS, including XP has an initial default admin user & admin group. Other users may assigned to the admin group, thereby granting them admin privileges. ADMIN privileges are REQUIRED to perform certain important functions, such as installing Windows Updates.

The changes is question did not arise spontaneously; they were occasioned by something your friends did, such as changing systems settings or installing software. In each case, you need to determine what your friends did immediately prior to their noticing these changes.

Are they using Fast User Switching? Did they recently change this setting?

When they boot, are they presented with a logon screen, or the welcome screen bearing icons for each user?

If the former, what, if any, user IDs are visible. If the later, what user IDs are displayed?

In either case, are passwords required?
