XP Home won't boot without CD

By compujacks ·
Hello all and thanks for reading.

I have a Dell Dimension 8400 that will not boot to the SATA hard drive without the Cd in the drive. In the bios, the SATA hdd is listed as "not available" but is there and working if I have the XP Home Cd in the drive.

I have formatted the drive numerous times

Sounds to me...

Sounds to me like there's a disconnect somewhere between the BIOS and the SATA drivers (from my experience, uses RAID-like drivers including iaStor.sys). I would say either upgrade the BIOS or install the SATA/RAID drivers for your motherboard, or both.

I'll try it

Try setting SATA in BIOS -

Try putting the SATA HDC in IDE mode or Compatibility mode in BIOS.

Drivers can reset it once the OS boots.

I had the same problem a couple of times, and that was a work-around until I replaced the SATA controller with a newer one with up-to-date BIOS.

CD Boots from IDE/ATA, and then loads the enhanced drivers for SATA. That's why it works.
