XP Home won't load

By AnswerMan ·
Brand new WD800 HDD, all new box. XP Home starts to install, goes to a white screen 5 minutes into loading "set-up"..... and stays there. If I open the CD Drive, it'll start over. The BIOS is clean. Help... trapped. It's not even getting far enough to be a video driver.... I am totally stuck.

But as I've never loaded XP Home I suppose it loads like XP Pro which first goes into a checking system screen before it asks you to accept the EULA and then proceeds to format the HDD. Just how far into this setup procedure are you getting?

Did this computer run XP prior to the new HDD?

Does the BIOS recognize the HDD? And if so is it seeing it as the correct capacity?

At this point I'd be looking at the jumper setting on the new HDD as well as the lead which I suppose is an IDE type although you haven't mentioned it, if the BIOS is seeing the HDD correctly if not maybe the drive is too big for the M'Board to read and a BIOS Flash may cure this problem.

As a good rule if you can format any HDD with a Windows 98 "Boot Disk" XP should load.
