XP Install error

By scott ·
I've read a few people receive this error, but now one has seemed to find a fix that works:

Installation Failed \I386\asms. Error Message : Incorrect Function

Fatal Error
One of the components that Windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.
Incorrect function.

Has anyone found a real fix?

Are you upgrading on an earlier version of Win or a Win OS on FAT system? If so, try a clean install (all OSes and partitions removed then install).

I have run into this problem as well in the middle of an installation. If you have a second Windows XP CD, you can insert it into the CD drive, click OK (to acknowledge the error message)which reboots the computer. After rebooting, the setup program resumes with the new CD. Don't know what causes the error in the first place, though.

Well, I finally got it to work last night.
I had two cd rom drives in the machine so I placed the same cd in the other drive and it installed.

Go figure.

Thanks for everyones insight... Just another "feature" from MS.
