xp install problems

By jp19_2000 ·
I am trying to install XP Pro onto 2 different computers and getting the same error message on both: "ntkrnlmp.exe could not be found"
"error code is 4"

Cpu 1: dell 4550, P4 2.4 512 mb ram, XP Home

Cpu 2: Emachines, celeron 750Mhz, 256 MB ram, Win Me

things ive tried:
1)ive tried doing upgrade and clean install
2)tried formatting and doing clean reinstall of me then upgrade to xp
3)tried doing format and using xp primer (allow xp setup on clean HDD) disks on clean HDD
4)Tried 4 different copies of XP 3 pro and one home on cpu2

it stops and gives error after first restart after copying data to hdd

ps know disks work, used one on my laptop just fine

Try the installation again and when you receive the "Press F6 to load SCSI/Raid Drivers" prompt, press F7 to bypass Advanced Configuration and PowerInterface (ACPI) detection.

Also can be a BIOS problem or fualty RAM. May want to ensure you have the most current BIOS or BIOS is set to default settings.

Same error on two very different PCs. Setup cannot find file needed. Although you believe your CD is good since you used it for another installation, the sysmptoms described point directly toward a bad install CD.

Check CD for scratches or foreign material on transparent surface. Clean thoroughly with soap and water and rub out scratches with regular toothpaste (not gel) working from hub to outer edge.

If the above is unsuccessful, borrow an XP Pro CD from a friend and try it.

You will need to install a prior version of Windows to use upgrade CD (it runs from within Windows). I recommend Win98 or 98SE.

Install Me then the new upgrade CD.

Another possibility although slim is that you have a common noncompatible component in each.
Get the compatibility tool at:

also, i have tried doing a format from a startup disk, once formatted, i tried to install xp and 200 pro with no luck ("program cannot be run from dos," i expected this) but i also cannot get the system's recovery disks to run from dos. as i said, i just opened the box on a 2000 pro (upgrade edition) and i was wondering about any tips for installing it on a clean hdd (cant be run from dos). i have 95, 98se, ME full retail for previous version verification.
and in response to first reply, i have flashed the bios and swapped out the mem, no luck.

any help would be appreciated since i have checked microsoft's KB with no luck

However is these are OEM disks for a Dell, Compaq, IBM, HP, e-machine, or other PC manufacturer? If so the software they added may not be compatabile with the PC Hardware or specifically a desktop. (Laptop necessary software may not work with a desktop).

Key words OEM Laptop and UPGRADE SOFTWARE. Upgrade should work on anything, OEM is usually set for the specific PC Desk/Lap top and goes nuts when loaded onto a different style PC. Saw this when attempted to load an IBM with Compaq OEM software. IBM lost its mind.

they (cd's) are as follows:
1. XP Pro OEM cd from a gateway
2. Windows xp professional (friends retail version)
3. Emach oem that came w/ the e mach(ME and works fine, but bwant to upgrade, ME is awful)
4. copy of xp home upgrade cd
5. windows 2k pro upgrade (removed from shrink wrap myself.

btw lol at otl's ibm blowup, hhad the same with the gateway oem cd

oh and btw solved one of my probs, reason emach recov disks wouldnt work in dos is that the cdrom was only reading immediately after insertion. Solution 1, swap it out with a working drive. Solution 1b, I plan on finding out what happens when a broken cd-rom drive encounters the business end of my 16 Lbs. sledge hammer.
