XP Installation Interruption

When I try to install Windows XP Professional on top of my Win2K Professional I get a blue screen of death with the notice that to continue will damage hardware and this hex error message:
0x0000007B(0xF9E8563C,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000).
This happens during the “Copying Windows files” portion of the setup. Compatibility check is fine.
Should I just reformat the disk and start from scratch?
