XP is constantly mapping itself

By chrisxs5 ·
I have 2 computers, on a 12 computer network, that are duplicating the mapped drives. For example: we have the server mapped as s:\server\c and the computer will create:
t:\server\c
u:\server\c
v:\server\c
w:\server\c etc.
My first thought is of course "virus" but I cant find anything on this issue.

So has any one run across this.

The only thing that I can think of is that the affected systems have been instructed to map the same drive several times you'll need to go into the Maped Drive Section and make sure that the same drive isn't listed several times.

As for Virus and Spy Ware scans you should always run these in Safe Mode Without Networking to make sure that you have no infections. If they come up as Clean that way you are going to have to start looking at the setup of the computers and you'll also need to see if every Mapped Drive is actually active and not just a ghost sitting there unusable.

I saw this in NT 4 a long time ago..Never in Xp tho..
I would try disabling the virus scan service and reboot (virus scans can do some strange things sometimes) and also try unchecking the "automatically search for network drives and folders" option under --tools--folder options--view.

Are you using a manditory profile? Possibly the settings are comming from that. I would also look at your login scripts..
