XP login

I have a laptop running xp pro and it was setup with all programs and desktop setting before I setup the laptop to login to a domain. I created as user in the domain and it is the same as the local username. When I login to the domain, I loose all my desktop setting and my programs are not available. How can I login to a domain and still keep my local settings? This laptop will be on and off the network constantly.
