why is the login to a domain controler on a win2k server very slow from an xp machine

My gues is you your DNS Server is not properly configured
note that you point DNS to your local DNS Server(DC)and set forewarders in your local dns server setting ,check your DNS Servers configuration.
in this you should have your FQDN with 4 subcontainers e.g. _MSDCS _Sites _TCP _UDP.

I had simular problems and it was defenatly the DNS Server config

If the IP is static then you might want to check DNS. It sounds like it is having difficulty locating the DC. I would try and run through the network wizard to join it to the domain again. Possibly create a computer account on the domain for the xp box. You also may want to add a lmhosts file or point to a wins server. Shouldn't have to, but good troubleshooting steps to see where the problem may lie.
