XP logon problem with NT 4 domain

By paulsenj ·
When logging on to an NT 4 domain, XP sometimes comes up with "Domain not found or username or password not recognized" message. I usually have to login to the local machine and delete that users local profile, but it does it with roaming profiles to. I looked on Microsofts site for a fix but couldn't find one. I have 52 machines doing this now. Please help!

Hello.
Since NT 4 relies on NetBIOS so much, I'd first try looking at that. Do you use WINS? If not, install it on a server and make sure that the IP properties of all statically configured boxes have the IP address of the WINS server populated. Also, make sure the DHCP scopes (if used) provide the IP of the WINS server. If you already use WINS, a common problem is a corrupt WINS database. You can try to repair the database using the jetpack utility (from MS). If that doesn't solve the problem and there's indication of errors in the databse, then you can try to "fix" it by stopping the WINS service and delete everything in the c:\winnt\system32\wins directory. Make sure you document all you static WINS mapping before you delete. When the service is restarted, it will create a new database. Do this off-hours to give all clients a chance to re-register themselves.

Hope this is helpful.
Cheers!

Have you out ruled this being a network hardware issue? What is the IP on the machine when this happens? Can you ping other computers on the network? You might have a bad hub or switch.
