XP losing File Associations

By tgoggins ·
We recently upgraded our entire enterprise with XP Pro SP1a as well as our hardware to HP Pentium 4 2.8HT's with 1.2gig of RAM running on a Novell Network. Re are recently experiencing intermittant issues where when a PC is used then shut down for the evening and then logged in again the next day, XP can not run any .EXE files and it asks for what program to use.

I am unable to associate the EXE file with it's own program to get them to work. We wind up having to reinstall to resolve the problem. Anyone know what would be causing this and how to fix it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If EXE is listed in the file association window delete it. It should not be there. If that is not the case I have seen viruses that can cause the same problem. Run a full virus scan. Since your EXE's don't work rename the file extension of the virus scanning executable to .com and double-click.

The SWEN virus is known to re-associate program types to a virus making it impossible to run programs.
