    xp machine connectivity

    i have a laptop having xp with service pack 2 and a desktop having the same they are interconnected to each other via a cross cable i have give a common workgroup name pinging works fine even the machine gets displayed under admin accounts but give error while trying to access any idea subnet mask is same also

      Are you using Simple Filesharing? Go to Windows Explorer – Tools – Folder Options – View and tick the last option ‘Use simple file sharing (Recommended)’. That might help.

      You may also want to check the security settings and enable the Guest account.

      Try setting up a user on the Notebook with a password, a user on the Desktop with password.
      Setup the notebook user on the Desktop with exact same credentials and vice versa. Right click on Share folder and give access to both users.

      Try disable Windows Firewall.

      Did you uncheck ?Enable IEEE 802.1x…? under the TCPIP Properties Authentication tab?
