XP/ME Networking

I have a client how has a Toshiba Laptop running XP and a Desktop running ME. They are connected to a router and able to surf the net, however, I can not see either machine in network neibourhood nor map to a drive. I have done all the obviouse, changing workgroup etc and have had no luck.
Any thoughts
