    XP My Computer stops responding

    Locked

    by bob.kohan ·

I have XP Pro SP2 installed. When I Right Click on a drive in “My Computer” or Explorer all I get is the ‘hour glass’. When I Ctl-Alt-Del, Task Manager shows My Computer is not responding. I have check on the Microsoft News Groups for this problem and it looks like many people are experiencing the same thing. I have tried every ‘fix’ I have read about but the problem has not gone away. Sometimes Windows displays an error message about sending a report to Microsoft because there was an error detected. I have done this also. I have checked for virues, spyware, and adware and have found nothing. I know this Right Click feature used to work but I do not know when it stopped working so I can not tie it to a specific software or hardware installation.

    Any ideas?

    B.K.

First, unplug everything going to your computer. then click on start-run and type in msconfig. go to start-up tab. click on the disable button. restart. see if the helps. if it does, re-enable each start-up one at a time. then do the same for everything you unplugged. hope you can find it that way. might be ram or video card too. try that.

Before you dismantle your computer, a few questions here:

How much memory is in the system?

What processes are running in TaskManager?

What is starting up at system boot?

If you boot in Safe Mode, does the issue persist?

have you ran HiJackThis to look for unusual processes? You can pickup Hijack This from this site:

      Hi

As well as the suggestions above – does it happen when you log on as a different user? Also, have you run ‘SFC /scannow’ to make sure that the Windows core files are all present and correct?

You might also want to use a registry checker to make sure your registry is configured correctly.

      Good luck

      Try to change drive letter.
But be careful: if it’s a system drive. All system variable are assined to this drive.
      Change it back afterwards.

Are you running Webroot Spysweeper by any chance?
If so in the options panel uncheck ” Add sweep for Spyware to Windows Explorer Context menu”
This is known to cause the symtoms you described!

I have the same problem. I try installing a new game, which required the .net, which is when I started having the problem. I did a complete install, and after installing the .net framework, I have the same problem again. I have only installed all the MS XP updates, patches, and security updates. I think it is tied to the .net framework.
