xp Network Install Problem

By Widgey Woo ·
I Have Created The Whistlerdist Share On A XP Pro Machine And Want To Perform A Network Install ON A Machine Runnung DOS 6.22 With A Network Client. When I connect to the distribution folder(T: \\pro1\whistlerdist) and attempt to run UNATTEND PRO2 IGet a "BAD COMMAND OR FILENAME" error. Althought I can see all the files folders and directories under the Whistlerdist share and can edit the Unattend.bat Unattend.txt files from the dos 6.22 machine I cannot get setup to run. Any Help Would Be Really Appreciated

Ok, couple things;

1. To perform remote installs, you need the RIS service; found in 2000 server.
2. Make sure your NIC in the recieving machine is PXE 2.0 compliant, or you will need RBFG.EXE to create a remote boot floppy (also found on serverOS's).
3. You need to rename your unattend.txt file to winnt.sif for the unattended installation to work properly, with the fewest problems.
4. what is this unattend pro2 file you are attempting to run, installs are initiated by WINNT32.EXE.

I have never been able to get a RIS installation to start from a non server OS. It may be possible, but it is going to be a headache to get it to work. What files are in the share? How did you get the installation image? Did you use sysprep? If the only other machine on the network is an XP Pro box, you would be better served by using the XP Pro CD to perform the installation. Feel free to Email me.

Good luck!
Joe

what you need to do is use the winnt command.

you can also use the batch file, but I prefer the command itself.

After connecting to your network drive, type
winnt /s:(location of the i386 source files) /u:(location of unattended.txt file)so for example, in your case I would type

winnt /s:\\pro1\whistlerdist /u:a:\unattend.txt

assuming your unattend file is on a floppy. You can also type winnt /? to see a complete list of options you can use.

good luck,
