XP on an NT4 domain

By Mick@work ·
I've heard rumours that XP has a no. of security flaws or problems on an NT domain.

Is this true or simply myth.

We have 0ver 2000 users running win98se, Nt4, 2000 and now XP

Any opinions greatly appreciated

thanks

I would make sure that you have your XP users running SP1 for XP, just to get some fixes. But it is no more or less insecure than NT.

Now, this is only if you are talking about XPPro. If you have anyone using XPHome, then that is another matter entirely! Personally, I hate XPHome, but XPPro is ok.

I still like Win2KPro better than XPPro, but that is just my opinion.

Could you be talking about XP Home edition? It cannot join a domain, and only has local settings so maybe that is the security you mention. XP Pro has no more problems than any other Micro$oft OS, once properly patched and updated. Then of course, patched again. XP hasn't been "certified" by Gov't agencies as "secure", mostly because they haven't really tested / researched it yet, as they have w/ NT 4.0 Good luck. We run all OS's on various networks and notice no security problems relative to which OS they run. You may want to disable the IIS and SMTP services on your Win2K and XP machines however.

XP systems can work fine on an NT4 domain and are far more secure that those 98se systems you have on your network.

The only issues you need to watch for are mostly related to the use of roaming profiles and network printers in a mixed NT4/W2k/XPenvironment. If you want more info in these particular areas let me know (experience talking here).

later...
