XP open everything with notepad

Hi:

I have a Dell XP pro laptop, lately opens every programs with Notepad and it’s a bunch of unreadable symbols. Doesn’t matter if you click MS Word, Excel, Norton AntiVirus, other programs, it all open up in notepad. Because of that, I can’t do a virus scan even I try to start from the CD. Does anyone has the same experience ? Please help.
