XP Pro boots (scrolling orphan files?)

On reboot an XP Pro machine which until today worked perfectly in all ways, goes to a green screen, and scrolls hundreds of thousands of files ….. saying “updating orphan files”…..

And it never stops ….

Any suggestions?
