I recently upgraded from 2000 Pro to XP Pro. I did a fresh install (not an upgrade) and it seems to be running fine expect that every session which is more than 30 minutes long ends in windows hang up. The screen feezes and there is no other alternative but to cold boot the system. Even if i do a reboot (hardware quick reboot) the system would not start but hang up during the start up.

After updating the patches etc I would investigate the amount of RAm and what is open. Like all MS Windows software XP is subject to memroy leakage and it uses a lot more RAM than its predecessors. I use Win XP Pro with Memturbo and have it set to run when the system gets down to 30 MB RAM (I have 512 MB) it kicks in every now and then, especially when using RAM intensive graphics applications, but never a lock up.

Also worth checking what else you have running in the background and using RAM by going Start >> Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >> System Information and opening Software Environment >> Startup Programs and seeing what it lists. then locate and stop those you dont want.
