XP Pro has a mind of its own

By ntmntm2000 ·
Two people in my area with XP Pro on their laptops have a situation recently where screens change, drop down menus open and close and different options are selected all on their own. Virus definitions and scan are as of 10/2. The mouse has been replaced on both when in the docking stations. It happens a few times a day and has been witnessed by the IT people. Others with XP do not have this problem. The IT people's solution is to 'rebuild' XP Pro rather than just reinstall it. It's not that we don't trust them, it's just that they don't sound sure of themselves about it. Does anyone recognize and have suggestions for this problem? Thanks for any assistance.

this sounds like backdoor. if you can find it, remove it and activity quits, well and good. but if the backdoor has been open, they could have stealth heaven knows what onto the system. i would be somewhat freaking to get to bottom of this if i were the it person. this is one time i *would* reinstall. if they do reinstall for you, try to get yourself a fresh image of the install for backup.
here is a quick thing to have a look at:
Control Panel/Add Remove Software. see anything in there you don't recognise? like back orifice? (smile)

oops, i think i just went zebra hunting. since these are laptops, i would have a look at the mice and other i/o devices. anything new installed like logitech trackman? if so, remove software for it and see if everything normalizes. look for interrupt conflicts between touchpads and io devices...

Did anyone look in the Event Viewer logs for any weird errors occuring when this freakout happens? That would tell you if there was a hardware or software error.

Personally, my guess is that if they check the logs, they will see an error in EXPLORER.EXE happening right as the freakout happens.

Why? Who knows? It could be malatious, or it could just be a mangled DLL file. Anyway, start with the logs for a clue on what is happening.

Had this happen to a colleague and it sounds to me like they have voice recognition turned on, along with the built-in microphone on the laptops. Try muting the microphone and see what happens. Then turn off voice recognition... it's probly somewhere in the accessibility options

This turned out to be the problem. Once the voice recognition was turned off, all the strange things stopped happening. Thank you all for your help.
