XP Pro OS Quick Freeze

By 4wynnes ·
I just purchased a brand new system about a week ago off the internet (STUPID,I know!). Yesterday it started to freeze after about a minute or so. And I mean FREEZE! No mouse, keyboard, the clock stops and Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't even work. It freezes in any situation on any screen after about a minute or sometimes a few minutes. I just tried booting off of the CD, and it seems to work that way.

Any ideas? Thanks!

When it seems to freeze, do you notice any hard drive activity? Can you hear it? Is the HDD light blinking rapidly or on solid?

Since this is a new system, it could simply be busy updating or indexing files or a lot of different things. This process can sometimes take 20-30 minutes when you've got a new system.

What happens if you let it sit and get through whatever it's doing in the background? Will it eventually come around? Have you tried waiting?

Thanks for the reply! It's just solid. Everything freezes. I let it sit for a couple of hours and it stayed the same. When I boot off of the CD, it lasts much longer but will still completely freeze at some point. I don't hear any noise.

What is your hardware?

I had a Dell D600 that did exactly the same thing. The same problem was reported for the D800.

One thing that did seem to work was to use a USB keyboard. The fix came in the form of a BIOS update.

Try using a USB keyboard and see if the problem persists. If it does, the manufacturers site may have a fix.

Good luck!
