XP Pro Scandisk at bootup

By frankc ·
I am running XP Pro, upgrade from ME. Running the FAT32 file system. Over 80% of the time, it goes into scan disk when I boot up, even though it properly shut down. Scan disk never finds anything wrong. Any thoughts ??

Hi,

Can you convert to NTFS? That would fix the problem... For scandisk to be running, then although it looks like its being shut down correctly, its probable that something is being given the chop before closing all its files...

You could trymanually shutting down running programs and services before the machine is asked to shutdown. That would help you indentify the problem software.

After that, well it depends on the software...

Cheers,
Tim.

I wish there was another rating category - TimTheToolman's answer was ok, but more information is needed - it did not solve the problem. Since I cannot give an acceptable rating and keep the question open, I must give it an unacceptable. --- Now,can I move to NTFS by using ghost to create an image from Fat32 and resotre that image to NTFS ? The conversion, according to the manual, will not utilize NTFS file security and oother NTFS file attributes, putting the conversion in the "why bother" category.

Hi,

well running convert.exe from the command prompt to do the conversion may not give you all the default security (although I've never actually checked the security after running it...) but at least it will give you a more stable and tolerant file system.

You dont need to ghost the data off to do this... just run convert.exe. Do a convert /? to get help on the options. Its a one way trip, though. No going back to FAT32.

Cheers,
Tim.
