XP pro - share folders & security issue

By gonesailing ·
Running XPpro OEM on dell portable - sort of!

XP pro ran ok when first setup, I then installed additional users, and also had the poor thing running on my home network (fixed IP) and DHCP networks, not too happy, takes along time to sort out where its..
An d then I had a major failure, lost access to data, lost a user account, hom hum, ran the system restore to last know (by me) good OS, deleted the user, cleaded up and recovered data from CD.
Now I go and install some network monitoring programs (ever wish you could rewind?)
First inkling was that the desktop took ages to load, when it did, the start bar (although visible) would not do anything, the mouse pointer became and hourglass over the start bar)
Right, cleaded up again, deintalled what I could, and restored back to a known good OS (deja vu)
seems OK, but I now cannot access the Share&security properties for any folders (yes I am an admin for the computer) and I cannot run the Perfomance manager from the Administer your computer dialog.
Note that the options are not grayed out, they look runnable, but when I click notheing happens, not a glimmer, the thing just sits there.

Before I take a very deep breath and reinstall XP from scratch (and I have seen postingsthan indicate this is not an easy job!)
has anyone else seen issues with the security & shareing folder options, and any ideas on what I can do?

all the best

Simon

Just an idea, try to move the paging file onto another partition (if you have more than one). If you don't, try increasing it. Again, just a long shot.

I have seen this before absolute bugger of a problem happened just after I did a clean reinstall of XP everything seemed fine then i tryed to access my Y: and it came up and said "access Denied" I right clicked to see if I could check the sharing and security on the drive only to find it was missing

the only way I could extract the data from the drive was by using msbackup to back everything on the drive then i erased the partition recreated it and restored the data Problem solved
Try checking the user access right sfor the drive
obviously you don't want to delete your can't access these setting check microsoft's web site to see if there is any way of changing the drives security settings
