I did a quick Google search on installation failed \i386\asms and there is a few different things but the main answer is a defective CD. It could be a bad batch or a bad copy. The O/S is looking for some thing from the CD and can not find it.
Do you have another XP cd to try or can you get one from a friend? Just to try not to pirate or use in place of your?

Try this
You don't need to install 98 to do the upgrade. Reformat the drive and run the XP CD it will ask you to supply your Original 98 CD. Put it in follow the prompts. Let us know how you get on.

Another suggestion and question. Did you have XP on this unit previously?

If you didn't the error message that you are getting is because there is some incompatible hardware involved and is preventing the installation from proceeding past that point.

The most obvious things where CD Burners but I did run across one DVD Reader from Samsung that caused this problem as well.

I wouldn't have bothered with the install of 98 unless you wanted to keep the FAT 32 Partition as you can install the Upgrade version with a new unused HDD and all that will be asked is that you insert the older version of Windows to allow the installation to proceed. If you have anything more than just 98 on the drive there can be incompatible software that causes problems as well.
