This problem usually comes up due to heavy file fragmentation. The only solution I've ever heard of that has worked is to get either the Insert CD or Knoppix CD and run ntfsfix. You can find these here:

http://www.knoppix.org/

You will have to download the iso images and burn them to a cd. Follow the instructions to run ntfsfix.

Cheers.

I looked through Microsofts KB and tech net it looks like you have some thing in hardware that XP dose not like. Update the bios, remove any unneeded hardware like extra cdroms, extrnal drives ect. Down load any new drivers for system, video ect. Review the excepted hardware list on Microsofts web site. Be sure that there is nothing on the hard drive that you are trying to install to. Boot to a floppy disk that has fdisk and format on it and use the remove non dos partition section. There is also a program from MS called delpart that will remove a problem partition so you can install Windows with no problems.
