Two days ago (8/3/10) I received the XP Pro SP3 update message that a security update was available and I downloaded the file but wanted to hold off installation until I was able to complete my work and re-boot later. Last night I realized this update still has not been installed (via warning message from Secunia’s Personal Software Inspector”) and verified this to be the case via Control Panel/Add/Remove which shows no install date for “Security Update for Windows XP (KB923789).”
I’m not sure if this is relevant, but in hindsight I think this might have been caused by my attempt to put the XP Pro machine into Standby mode (before the update was installed) while leaving for an errand, but the Standby process never ran completely as I recall.
Then last night when shutting down the XP Pro I verified via the logoff screen (which did not show that an update was going to be installed on exit), and today Add/remove still shows this update as not being installed. I did attempt to “remove” the update but I get no response when the update is clicked. As of now, a web search has turned up a couple of possible solutions but they seem to apply to an XP repair/complete reinstall (which is not the case — previous security updates have installed without a problem), or not sure if they apply to XP Pro SP3.
For reference, this article appears to be what I am looking for http://www.pchell.com/support/windows_updates_download_but_wont_install.shtml but would appreciate any feedback if the steps in the article make sense. I also have found this MS support article but also not sure it applies to my situation http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=943144
Thanks in advance for any thoughts….
