xp pro unable to open apps after install

after installing xp pro no programs were present on the start menu. the folders are still in c:\program files and also in the add / remove window box in the control panel. I can still open most of them by clicking the .exe file for them whatdid Ido and how can I get them to start from the start menu.I don’t have org cd’s to reinstall most of them any advice or help would be greatly appreciated thanks hal
