By dannypool ·
When I try to install xp Pro over a new version of XP home I get an error of the OS that is installed is newer than the OS on the CD. can I copy the XP Pro to a HDD and add a download of the SP1 & 2?

Not the way to do it.

Back up all your data, boot from the CD and delete the xp home partition and create the new partition and continue with the install.

Slip Stream

I presume that you do not want to start over from scratch. You just want to upgrade your existing install from Home to Pro.

Just a side note first, since this is an older install disk make sure you are following the licensing rules per the EULA. Specifically, you cannot have the same copy of XP installed and running on 2 computers. And, in the case of OEM software, the license is locked to the original hardware and cannot legally be installed on a different computer.

What you need to do, is create a slipstream install CD.

Check out this TR download.

Also, you do not need SP1 as SP2 has all of the SP1 updates in it.
