XP Pro Won't Connect 2 Domain NT4 Server

By maralit ·
After following all the step by step procedures connecting my XP Pro Compaq Presario S4000NX to domain NT4 server and registering the XP Pro machine to the NT4 domain server, I am still getting an error message saying that there is no server in this system. I can ping the IP address of the domain NT4 server from the XP Pro machine but not the domain name. Any advice, help and suggestion will be highly appreciated.

Can you connect to a share on the server with a valid username/password?

Also have you turned off the fancy user interface and gone for a standard login prompt? Or are you even getting that far?

Try adding your XP Pro machine to a workgroup with the same name as your domain first, then connecting shares. If that worked then your networking side of things is obviously just fine (even if the ping is good, there may be other problems).

Can you ping the machine via it's computer name as well as IP? If not is could well be a DNS issue - one way round that is to add the computer name and it's IP to the hosts file.

Go into your network places properties and enter properties for the LAN connection get into TCP/IP and go to advanced filtering and make sure XP's firewall IS NOT enabled, and ALL ports are allowed.

This could be an encription problem.
Go to Local Security Settings (Control Panal, Administrative tools). In Security options, double-click "Domain member: digitally encript or sign secure channel data (always)" and select "disable".
