XP product activation after reformatting

By mills ·
I had a virus and reformatted my system and reinstalled Win XP(original disks that came with the system). It never asked me for a product id # when installing, but appears to work fine except for two things: It will not let me install any microsoft product even with the id codes (says that they are invalid)and when I attempted to figure the problem out on microsofts website it shuts my computer down. I repeat that these are original disks that came with my computer.. not some pirated stuff. Any ideas on how to solve this???

What type of system, prefab? If it's a prefab (Dell, IBM, etc) you may have to contact the vendor. Most prefab machines come with not only a CD but also a partition on the HDD that contains recovey information.
Hope this helps

I had a similar problem when I reformatted and tried reinstalling my Money 2003. First check to make sure that there aren?t any previous versions of the ms software on your system. Then go to Start, Run and Open regedit (Registry Editor) BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO MODIFY AND CHANGE ANYTHING ELSE. ONLY REMOVE THE PROGRAM YOU?RE HAVING A PROBLEM WITH! You can seriously mess up your system so you may want to contact Microsoft about this possible solution first. Once you have removed the related directories, restart once. Then try re-installing your software.

It worked for me. Environment is XP Pro, MS Money 2003 Deluxe Business Edition.

Let me know if it works or if you have questions before attempting.
