XP reboots when trying to print

By Megtek ·
Every time I go to print anything to any printer (local or network) on my PC it reboots on me. I cannot even go into the printer settings. As soon as I click Start, Settings, Printers and Faxes - REBOOTS! Frustrating. I am thinking that I would remove all printers and re-add them - but I can't! I have XP SP 2.

First go to your system properties icon found in your control panel. Then go to the advanced tab and under startup and recovery click on settings. Uncheck the box that says automatically restart. Then restart your computer then see if you can get to the printers applet. If not then open regedit and Delete drivers from HKEY local machine, current control set, control, print, printers.

Good luck

If the above doesn't work, may save time and effort by trying a repair installation of XP. Sounds like the printer applet has gone berserk. You will need an XP CD and will have to re-install any SPs and updates not on the installation CD.

See following link for repair installation instructions:

Sounds to me like some form of malware, if you don't already have them, get Spybot S&D,
Ad-Aware, and CWShredder, update them and run them all. I also have heard many horror stories about SP2, uninstall it ASAP. I do tech support for Charter Communications and SP2 has caused very numerous communication problems between the computer and any other device.
