XP recognizes USB 2.0 flash drive as a CD-ROM/DVD drive; asks for disk

I have been searching the Internet for a solution to a flash drive problem, but I never found any posts which match my seemingly unique problem.

I have a month-old 8GB 2.0 USB flash drive (Emprex PD330) (yes, I’ve figured out that it is garbage). I cannot access any of my data. When I insert the drive into any USB port, on any computer, my XP recognizes it as USB hardware, but it thinks it is a CD-ROM or DVD drive and prompts me to insert a disk!

The drive also shows up in Disk Management as a removable disk with “No media”.

My only interest at this point is recovering my data. I’ve given up all hope of coming out of this with a functioning flash drive.

Has anyone heard of this strange situation before? Any help would be appreciated?

btw: as a tech student I have access to date recovery/forensics software if it comes to that.
