XP refuses to shutdown

by rmjohn . Updated 18 years, 9 months ago

Hi,
While I try to switch off my Win XP Home with SP2 Laptop it refuses to shut down many a times. Some times it shuts down without any problems. When it refuses I would still be able to move the pointer around. But pressing the shutdown repeatedly wouldn’t help at all. I will then have to press and hold the power button on the laptop till it shuts off.

Of late the machine has also been creating lots of noise.. I mean I can hear the fan’s roaring sound even when I perform very basic tasks like browsing etc. However, it doesnt create so much heat.

Yea.. its an old man.. old centrino processor. 1.7 Ghz with 1GB RAM.

I saw a similar problem at MS website.
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307274&sd=RMVP however i already have SP2 installed and I dont see what they say is actually a solution.

Can someone please help?
