XP Repair Setup does not complete

By cruffin ·
Attempting to replace am ASUS V7700 32MB AGP with ATI Radeon 128MB AGP in XP SP1. ATI instructions said to remove current AGP drivers before installing ATI. I did. Shut down, installed new card, rebooted, got no display. Shut down and reinstalled old card, rebooted, got as far as XP splash screen, then no display. Booted to XP CD, ran repair, after restart got XP splash screen but no display (could still see disk activity as if continuing to load, but no display).
Performed parallel installation on 2nd HD, successfully. Installed ATI card under new installation successfully. (Now have two instances to select at boot menu) Original installation is trying to complete setup, get the message "Setup is restarting......", then hangs. Any way to complete setup in original installation? MS Support KB says reinstall will delete restore points, etc. Would like to go back to original install.

Sounds like part of XP's default video driver was deleted and cannot load default driver.

I would perform a repair install over original XP installation with ATI adapter installed. Instructions for a repair installation can be found at link below:

Performed repair, also did a parallel install. Parallel install recognizes ATI card, XP loads and I can run all programs. After the repair install, when the system reboots and the menu for which installatin to load comes up, and I load the original instll (which is the repaired installation), a blue screen with an XP logo in the upper left comes up and says "Setup is restarting..........". The disk drive goes thru ~4 mins of activity then stops. Are there files I cam copy from the CD or parallel install to the c:\Windows dri?
