XP send me back to C:// all the time.

I cannot fix a problem with windows XP. When opening my documents the system brings me back to C:/. I try to open any other files and always bring me back to C:/. Also the computer make funny sounds when booting and during work. What could it be. I taught of a worm or virus but it is not. Should I go in registry to fix something. I anyone met such a problem with his customer.
