XP sets shortcut driveletter to UNCpath

By dbaideme ·
Windows XP - I have a shortcut on my desktop pointing to a program on a network drive. Example n:\notepad.exe if the network drive is disconnected and I double click the shorcut XP automatically resets the shortcut path to the UNC path. Example \\server\c$\winnt\notepad.exe when the network drive is available again it will not change it back.

I NEED IT TO STOP CHANGING THE SHORTCUT PLEASE HELP!

XP sets shortcut driveletter to UNCpath

by Joseph Moore In reply to XP sets shortcut drivelet ...

I just did a little experimentation with a similar setup on my XPPro box.
I set the shortcut to be Read Only, and that stopped it from changing its location on me.

So, try that. It worked for me! Just right-click on the shortcut and choose Properties, then click the Read Only checkbox.

hope this helps

Yes I had already tried the same thing and it does work. I was hoping someone would tell me how to shut the "feature" off. Registry hack or whatever.

Thanks

Here's the registry entry to stop this behavior:

HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Policies/Explorer

Add the following value:

Value: LinkResolveIgnoreLinkInfo
Type: REGDWORD
Data: 1

Hope this helps!

Interesting reg entry. This will prevent the drive mapping from being recreated automatically but still allows the shortcut to be modified to the UNC path automatically.

Disable shortcut updating in Win2k/WinXP

If you move a file and by that disable any shortcuts referring to it, then Win2k/WinXP will try to make the shortcuts correct by searching the HDD to find the file again.

This can be annoying if changing HDD letters back and forth. One can disable this feature in the registry with this DWORD :

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software \Microsoft Windows \CurrentVersion \Policies \Explorer]
NoResolveTrack = 1

Sorry, in the registry path above... there should be a backslash between "Microsoft" and the next level "Windows"
