XP Setup in Endless Loop

By King_Tut_NY ·
I lost the TCP/IP Services in an XP Desktop PC that was "Perfect" for 9 months after installing a VPN Product. I removed the VPN Software. I was advised to repair the XP installation from the CD, so I attempted this.

The Setup gets to the "R" to repair choice and I proceed. It begins to install files from 39% down to 34% remaining. Then it hangs for 1 minute and Reboots and then proceeds to go into the same "copying/rebooting" routine. If I dont boot to the CD, then it begins to load XP and then requests the CD with a message stating "Setup will continue, please intall CD".

I cant break this loop no matter what I try. Safe mode will ask for the setup to complete. The recovery console will work fine and all my data is present (DIR command).

I removed all boards except the integrated Motherboard (Intel). Same result...

How can I break out of this setup loop, or figure out what is causing the install to hang at 34% and reboot endlessly ??

Thank You

I searched Microsoft's support site and could not find an answer to your problem. Should this be happening to me, I would back up my hard drive, at least the critical data, to another system by slaving in the hard drive on another system that has at least Win2K installed on it to read an NTFS partiton(s). A Win98 system will work fine, provided your hard disk is using a FAT32 partition(s). Once I have the critical data backed up, I would reinstall XP with a clean install and then bring my data back in. Here is a list of what I consider "critical data":

1. My Documnents
2. Favorites
3. Financial data
4. Email
5. Address Book
6. Desktop items that are NOT shotcuts
7. Pictures
8. Music
9. Any other user critical data such as PDF files, scans, access databases, contact manager information, and downloaded files.

Since you are using XP, this would have to be done for each user profile on the computer. AOL users will have their emails and address book stored on AOL's server. The same is true for Exchange server users on the Exchange server.

I hope this helps.

When you get to the Recovery mode use the following command at the prompt: chkdsk /r.
