Xp sharing folders in NT 4 environment

By danny.cintron ·
I have an office with a Toshiba Tecra 9100 running XP with no service packs. They are trying to share out a folder on the c drive and whenever an NT 4.0 machine in that LAN tries to map to the machine they receive a network path cannot be found message. The xp machine can map to an NT4.0 machine fine and I can map to it's share from my machine here in corporate from the WAN. What do you think is the problem?

Is Simple file sharing disabled? xp has this default setting at install that permits you only to share folders locally it can be disabled to allow you to share resources on the network by entering folder options, view scroll to the bottom of the list and clear the check box marked "Use simple file sharing"

Win2K and XP both use a different port for file and print sharing (TCP port 445) instead of old TCP port 139 that all of the older Windows OS' use. Now, you can enable port 139 on XP for older OS compatibility.
Just go to the properties of the NIC in the XP box. Go to Properties of the TCP/IP settings. Click the Advanced tab. Click the WINS tab.
In the NetBIOS Settings box, select "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" and click OK.

That should enable the older port 139. I am willing to guess that when you go into the Properties, you will see it Disabled.

Once you enable it, try and connect from the NT machine.

hope this helps

I thank all of you for your answers. All of that checked out but I think the real problem here is the migration that is occurring from our Nt4 environment to the 2000 environment. I think once we get migrated perhaps the problem(s) can be resolved. I'll hope for the best. Thanks again.
