XP SP 3 on AMD PC: What is the solution?

By kdmrpm ·
How do you solve the rebooting problems that XP3 causes on AMD Compaq Desktop? I had upgraded once before to SP-3 and the perpetual rebooting started. I did a system restore prior to the upgrade which solve the problem. Howver, I haven't a need to upgraded to SP-3; until my PC after log in shows a missing "uncdms.dll file" and I was told in order to fix this I needed to upgrade with XP-3. With all the problems I've read about SP-3 and the rebooting issues was that problem ever solve?

Upgrading to SP3 is not the best way to fix your problem.

If you have not installed any new applications, and your PC is suddenly complaining about a missing DLL, then upgrading to SP3 is not the best way to fix the underlying issue.

Uncdms is related to Windows Desktop Search.

The best way to fix this is to uninstall and reinstall Windows desktop search.

Below is a link about how to do that:

All of the SP3 issues that I have ever had all related tot he Original CPU System used to make the Slipstreamed Image of the Recovery Disc.

While it was mostly related to AMD CPU's I did run across one Intel Model that had the same issue and it was fixed with the same script from M$.

But a outline of the problem is here

I'll try to find out if M$ still has a link to this on their Web Site but as most of XP has gone End of Life they may no longer have it up.

These M$ Web Pages may also be of help

What to do before installing SP3

Hot Fix to install prior to applying SP3

The above should prevent any problems with AMD CPU's and SP3.
