XP sp2 and com ports (in use) problem

By certtrainer ·
I am running Windows XP with sp2 installed. The hardware manager shows several com ports with the (in use) tag along side.
I don't have any software running that would use these ports such as hyper-terminal or tera term nor any external devices attached to the real or virtual ports. Is there a way to release these ports when not in use? They don't seem to function when I attach my radio gear to these ports.

Device Manager

First, are these real or virtual COM ports?

If virtual, you may have devices that even though they are not connected through the serial port create a virtual COM part for their driver or software.

If you open up device manager and choose to show devices by connection, you can see if these are real or virtual ports, and perhaps get an idea as to what hardware device is using the port.

If you are sure that any virtual ports are not in use, you can uninstall them from device manager. Just right click on the port you wish to remove.

If the physical COM ports do not appear in device manager, you may need to enter BIOS setup and enable them.
